The Schuman Centre for European Studies invite you to Brussels to join the State of Europe Forum, Friday May 10 and Saturday May 11 2024, to engage on the theme of ‘Wake up, Europe!’

The State of Europe Forum has been held annually since 2011 (prior to COVID) in the capital of the country holding the EU presidency on or near May 9, Europe Day. On this date in 1950, just five years after the end of war in Europe, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman surprised the world with his three-minute speech in which he laid the foundation of the European house where today almost half a billion Europeans from 27 nations live together in peace.

This date is officially recognised as Europe Day, the birthday of the European project. Participants will reflect on Schuman’s vision for ‘a community of peoples deeply rooted in Christian values’, and on Christian responsibility for Europe’s future (see stateofeuropeforum.eu/about/a-community-of-peoples/).

The Russian invasion of Ukraine two years ago is challenging the assumptions of the international order which emerged from the rubble of WW2. The Schuman story about how the peace was won becomes freshly relevant. Europe’s values, identity and future are at stake in this conflict. At this year’s forum, participants will be challenged in the opening plenary (Friday evening) to wake up to Europe’s core identity and the story that originally shaped it. The second plenary on Saturday morning will be a wake up call to brotherhood across a polarised and fractured Europe. The third and closing plenary on Saturday afternoon will awaken us to face the future with vision, hope and action, with the upcoming European Parliamentary elections in view (June 6-9).

Het Schuman Centrum voor Europese Studies nodigt u uit in Brussel om deel te nemen aan het State of Europe Forum, vrijdag 10 en zaterdag 11 mei 2024, om zich te engageren rond het thema ‘Wakker worden, Europa!

Het State of Europe Forum wordt sinds 2011 (voorafgaand aan COVID) jaarlijks gehouden in de hoofdstad van het land dat het voorzitterschap van de EU bekleedt op of nabij 9 mei, Europa Dag. Op deze datum in 1950, slechts vijf jaar na het einde van de oorlog in Europa, verraste de Franse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Robert Schuman de wereld met zijn drie minuten durende toespraak waarin hij de basis legde voor het Europese huis waar vandaag de dag bijna een half miljard Europeanen uit 27 landen in vrede samenleven.

Deze datum is officieel erkend als Europa Dag, de verjaardag van het Europese project. De deelnemers zullen nadenken over Schumans visie van ‘een gemeenschap van volkeren die diep geworteld is in christelijke waarden’ en over de christelijke verantwoordelijkheid voor de toekomst van Europa (zie stateofeuropeforum.eu/about/a-community-of-peoples/).

De Russische invasie van Oekraïne twee jaar geleden stelt de aannames van de internationale orde, die voortkwam uit de puinhopen van WO2, op de proef. Het Schuman-verhaal over hoe de vrede werd gewonnen, wordt weer actueel. Europa’s waarden, identiteit en toekomst staan op het spel in dit conflict. Op het forum van dit jaar zullen de deelnemers in de openingsplenaire (vrijdagavond) worden uitgedaagd om wakker te worden met de kernidentiteit van Europa en het verhaal dat deze oorspronkelijk heeft gevormd. De tweede plenaire vergadering op zaterdagochtend zal een oproep zijn tot broederschap in een gepolariseerd en gebroken Europa. De derde en afsluitende plenaire vergadering op zaterdagmiddag zal ons wakker schudden om de toekomst met visie, hoop en actie tegemoet te treden, met de komende Europese Parlementsverkiezingen in het vooruitzicht (6-9 juni).

Le Centre d’études européennes Schuman vous invite à Bruxelles pour participer au Forum sur l’état de l’Europe, les vendredi 10 et samedi 11 mai 2024, sur le thème “Réveillez-vous, l’Europe !”.

Le Forum sur l’état de l’Europe se tient chaque année depuis 2011 (avant le COVID) dans la capitale du pays qui assure la présidence de l’UE, le 9 mai, Journée de l’Europe, ou à une date proche. À cette date, en 1950, cinq ans seulement après la fin de la guerre en Europe, le ministre français des affaires étrangères, Robert Schuman, a surpris le monde en prononçant un discours de trois minutes dans lequel il jetait les bases de la maison européenne où, aujourd’hui, près d’un demi-milliard d’Européens de 27 nations vivent ensemble en paix.

Cette date est officiellement reconnue comme la Journée de l’Europe, l’anniversaire du projet européen. Les participants réfléchiront à la vision de Schuman pour “une communauté de peuples profondément enracinée dans les valeurs chrétiennes” et à la responsabilité chrétienne pour l’avenir de l’Europe (voir stateofeuropeforum.eu/about/a-community-of-peoples/).

L’invasion russe de l’Ukraine il y a deux ans remet en question les hypothèses de l’ordre international qui a émergé des décombres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L’histoire de Schuman sur la façon dont la paix a été gagnée prend tout son sens. Les valeurs, l’identité et l’avenir de l’Europe sont en jeu dans ce conflit. Lors du forum de cette année, les participants seront invités, lors de la séance plénière d’ouverture (vendredi soir), à se réveiller à l’identité fondamentale de l’Europe et à l’histoire qui l’a façonnée à l’origine. La deuxième séance plénière, le samedi matin, sera un appel à la fraternité dans une Europe polarisée et fracturée. La troisième séance plénière, qui clôturera le forum le samedi après-midi, nous incitera à affronter l’avenir avec vision, espoir et action, dans la perspective des prochaines élections parlementaires européennes (du 6 au 9 juin).
